NYT’s At War Brings True Tales of War and Peace to Millions

When The New York Times originally launched its military blog, At War, in 2008, it was a novel approach to coverage of wars that had been raging since 2001 and were already being forgotten by the public at large. It invited readers, from service members and aid workers to veterans and military spouses, to contribute their stories and share their experiences “at war” with Times readers. After eight years, however, the blog went dormant. Then, Lauren Katzenberg arrived.

When you think of audio news, one of three things probably comes to mind: radio, podcasts or headlines read via smart speaker. But some news outlets are trying something new — audio articles. Audio articles are recordings of single stories already published as written content. Instead of accessing them through a podcast app, the stories are often made available on the webpage right alongside the print stories.

The Post and Courier Joins Alliance for Policy Expertise

South Carolina’s The Post and Courier recently joined the News Media Alliance. One of the oldest newspapers in the South, its age hasn’t kept it from being at the top of its game. The paper won its first Pulitzer Prize in 1925, for editorial writing, and more recently in 2015 for public service journalism when it published a series of articles about the toll domestic violence takes on women in South Carolina. Now, The Post and Courier has joined the Alliance for help navigating today’s economic and political landscape, and to keep its excellent journalism alive and flourishing.

Twitter Poet Makes Sharing News an Art Form

News overload isn’t all bad; it has forced our industry to get creative. We have excellent new podcasts coming out regularly, young journalists who are taking risks to tell important stories, and more people are subscribing to news. And we’re all getting more creative in how we tell stories. One of the more entertaining additions to the news landscape recently has been Limericking, a Twitter account that shares important news through — you guessed it — limericks.
