Today, the News Media Alliance – representing almost 2,000 news organizations – again called on Congress to allow publishers to negotiate collectively with dominant online platforms, namely Facebook and Google.

The direction of Facebook’s announcement today is very positive and we commend them for it.
This week, Australia’s competition regulator announced it would look into whether the tech duopoly has disrupted the news media market to the disadvantage of publishers.
At a House Information Technology Subcommittee Hearing today, News Media Alliance President and CEO David Chavern called upon online content distribution platforms – specifically Google and Facebook – “to…help stem the flow of misinformation—a problem that is largely of their own making.”
The future of quality journalism requires that we find new and better ways to provide economic returns to news publishers. We view Facebook’s announcement today as a positive one and we strongly support any and all experiments to increase reader engagement and subscriptions.
