At a House Information Technology Subcommittee Hearing today, News Media Alliance President and CEO David Chavern called upon online content distribution platforms – specifically Google and Facebook – “to...help stem the flow of misinformation—a problem that is largely of their own making.”
The future of quality journalism requires that we find new and better ways to provide economic returns to news publishers. We view Facebook's announcement today as a positive one and we strongly support any and all experiments to increase reader engagement and subscriptions.
Today, the News Media Alliance – representing almost 2,000 news organizations – called on Congress to allow publishers to negotiate collectively with dominant online platforms. The objective is to permit publishers to have concrete discussions with the two dominant distributors of online news content, Google and Facebook, on business model solutions to secure the long-term availability of local journalism produced by America’s newsrooms.
