Journalists have been on the front lines of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and on the streets for the many protests surrounding the killing of George Floyd, and publishers have been speaking out within their pages, too. Every day, the Alliance will feature a different editorial or op-ed from a news publisher.

Congress Can Protect the First Amendment by Holding Big Tech Accountable

The First Amendment enshrines fundamental freedoms so core to our democracy that they must be honored. But the First Amendment has limits, and non-government entities that are granted the ability and power to spread speech must not be immune to the repercussions of their actions. The most powerful market actors should not be allowed to censor or silence free speech, or promote false, potentially harmful information with no accountability.

Alliance Releases New White Paper Outlining Google’s Dominant Market Behavior, Harming of Journalism

Today, the News Media Alliance released a White Paper, “How Google Abuses Its Position as a Market Dominant Platform to Strong-Arm News Publishers and Hurt Journalism.” The Alliance has submitted the White Paper to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the House Antitrust Subcommittee for incorporation into their investigation of Google’s anticompetitive behavior.

Statement: Alliance Commends U.S. Copyright Office for DMCA Section 512 Report

The News Media Alliance commends the U.S. Copyright Office for its comprehensive report on Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. We are pleased to notice that the report acknowledges that the intended balance of the safe harbor system created by Section 512 is currently “askew” and that the system might facilitate at least some activities and service providers that Congress did not intend to protect.

Statement: House Introduces Legislation to Provide SBA Affiliation Waiver for News Publishers

Today, a House version of the “Local News and Emergency Information Act of 2020” was introduced by Chairman David Cicilline (D-RI) and Ranking Member F. James Sensenbrenner (WI-05) that offers legislative text around a Small Business Administration affiliation waiver that would allow more news publishers to apply for SBA loans under the Paycheck Protection Program.
