In 2020, Congress approved the Fallen Journalists Memorial Act, and the bill was signed into law, allowing plans to go ahead to create a memorial dedicated to all journalists who have died while reporting the news and in recognition of the vital role that the free press plays in our democracy.

On April 27, the Alliance joined a brief, filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey Appellate Division, concerning access to police internal affairs records under the common law right of access in New Jersey.
On April 21, the Alliance joined a brief, filed in the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division First Department, concerning the application of New York’s amended anti-SLAPP law.
On April 19, the Alliance joined a brief, filed in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, that argues Iowa Code 727.8A is a violation of the First Amendment by criminalizing any person “knowingly plac[ing] or us[ing] a camera or electronic surveillance device that transmits or records images or data while the device is on the trespassed property.”
On April 14, the News/Media Alliance joined 25 other organizations, on a letter led by the National Press Club and National Press Club Journalism Institute, calling for the Biden Administration to prioritize the release of two U.S. journalists being held hostage abroad.
