European Anti-SLAPP Law Proposed

On April 27, the European Commission released its proposed Directive on anti-SLAPP law. Anti-SLAPP laws seek to prevent entities from filing costly and frivolous lawsuits called SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) suits that seek to punish protected speech it disagrees with.

Alliance Joins Brief Arguing Against Warrantless Surveillance

On November 11, the Alliance signed onto a brief, filed in the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that law enforcement should not be permitted to conduct warrantless, long-term camera surveillance. In Tuggle v. United States, law enforcement officers used three cameras attached to utility poles to film Tuggle for over a year, in an attempt to gather evidence of drug trafficking—all without a warrant.

The News Media Alliance will testify today at 10:00 a.m. ET at a House Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law Subcommittee hearing, “Reviving Competition, Part 2: Saving the Free and Diverse Press,” on the need for the dominant tech platforms, such as Facebook and Google, to compensate news publishers fairly for use of their content.
