In response to Meta’s statement today that it would consider removing news from Facebook if the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act – a bill that would require the dominant tech platforms to fairly compensate news publishers for use of their content – is passed in the U.S., the News/Media Alliance stated:
The Alliance today, in its comments in response to the FTC’s Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on commercial surveillance and data security, recommended the adoption of a “Data Poaching Rule” that would prohibit dominant tech platforms from poaching first-party consumer data from publishers.

One and a half years ago, the Australian parliament adopted legislation creating the News Media Bargaining Code, a revolutionary measure aimed at protecting news publishers from the dominance of a few big online platforms. Now, as the JCPA is making progress in Congress, it is a good time to evaluate the success of Australia’s Code.
