PRIVACY

The Alliance supports a national privacy framework that ensures consumers have clear, enforceable data privacy protections; control over the use of their personal information; and greater transparency into businesses’ data protection practices, while preserving the benefits that come from the responsible use of data. The Alliance believes that consumers are best served by a single national data privacy law instead of a patchwork of potentially conflicting state laws.

At the state level, the Alliance is working with lawmakers to ensure that privacy initiatives are harmonized, workable, and preserve First Amendment protections.

The Alliance is also active in sectoral privacy bills that could affect news media entities, including legislation on children’s privacy and online safety, the treatment of health and sensitive data, automated decision-making, and an array of advertising practices.

The Alliance remains engaged in the regulatory space, commenting on data privacy and security rulemaking under consideration by the Federal Trade Commission.

Alliance members can receive regular updates, including legislative tracking, by contacting membership@newsmediaalliance.org.
