S.J. Resolution 49, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), ended in a tie vote of 49-49 on April 30 with three Republicans including Paul, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AL) — joining all Democrats present in support of the resolution. The resolution was designed to terminate the national emergency Trump declared to implement his global tariffs. Two Republicans who voiced support for the measure were absent for the vote, which needed a simple majority to pass. Paul and Wyden used a legislative procedure to force a vote in the Senate; however, even if it passed, the resolution most likely would not have been taken up in the House.
