News Media Are the First and Most Effective Means for Exercising Our Five First Amendment Freedoms

As we celebrate National Newspaper Week, we are raising awareness about our five First Amendment freedoms, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution — freedom of the press, speech, religion, petition and assembly — and the ways the news media help promote and protect those freedoms. Those five freedoms seem so basic, and we sometimes may take them for granted, but there are surprisingly few channels that allow us to exercise all five freely.

Maryland Stands Up for a Free Press, Honors the Capital Gazette Shooting Victims

June 28 will always be a hard day for any journalist­ – that was the day, exactly one year ago, that five newsroom staffers were lost to the hands of a gunman who shot his way into The Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, barring a grudge against the local paper. While the gunman was later arrested and will soon stand trial, The Capital Gazette is only one of many newsrooms that have faced losses in the past year.

News/Media Alliance Joins Amicus Brief Supporting Expanded Access to Police Personnel Records

On November 15, 2024, the News/Media Alliance joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and 26 media organizations in an amicus brief in the New York Court of Appeals in NYP Holdings v. NYPD in support of the lower court’s holding that the repeal of New York Civil Rights Law Section 50-a allows for access to police personnel records regardless of when those records were made.

News/Media Alliance Joins Coalition Letter Calling for Charges Against Journalist Covering Demonstration to be Dropped

On October 22, 2024, the News/Media Alliance joined a coalition of media organizations in a letter, led by Freedom of the Press Foundation, to New York District Attorney Gary Pasqua urging him to drop all charges against Indian Time reporter Isaac White, who was arrested at a land claim demonstration in New York on May 21, 2024.
