The News/Media Alliance joined two stakeholder letters urging the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin its rulemaking proceeding governing Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations for unmanned aircraft systems. On May 16, 2024, President Biden signed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 into law. This rulemaking would build on nearly ten years of work by the FAA, stakeholders, and other federal agencies including the issuance of BVLOS waivers and exemptions, standards setting, and recommendations published in the final report of the Beyond Visual Line of Sight Aviation Rulemaking Committee on March 2022. The News Media Coalition letter was sent on July 31 and the U.S. Chamber letter was sent on July 24. The Alliance will continue to monitor this important issue.
