Alliance Joins Letter Opposing Prohibition on Recording Police

On February 18, the Alliance signed onto a letter by the National Press Photographers Association opposing Arizona HB 2319. That proposed Bill that would make it illegal to film law enforcement “if the person making the video recording does not have the permission of a law enforcement officer and is within fifteen feet of where the law enforcement activity is occurring.” The letter explains that this restrictive language violates not only the First Amendment but also Ninth Circuit precedent recognizing the right to record law enforcement. The Alliance continues to support journalists’ right to record law enforcement performing their duties as vital to their First Amendment freedoms.
