The past nine months have been uniquely trying for us all; yet as we enter the holiday season, I am reminded of all that we have to be thankful for – yes, even in 2020. It may not be the year we envisioned back on January 1, but there have been some bright, shining moments for the news industry and for the Alliance in this strange, dark year.
News publishers across the country and around the world have long been witnesses to and reporters of historical moments and movements. Journalists have been on the front lines of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and on the streets for the many protests surrounding the killing of George Floyd, and publishers have been speaking out within their pages, too. Every day, the Alliance will feature a different editorial or op-ed from a news publisher.
In Newton, Kansas, less than 3 percent of teachers are non-white, while the student body is 38 percent non-white. For reporters at The Newton Kansan, this discrepancy is an essential story for their community – and one they believe every community newspaper should be tracking.
