On October 10, the News/Media Alliance joined a letter to the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Secretary of Commerce regarding AISI’s announcement that it had entered into agreements “that enable formal collaboration on AI safety research, testing and evaluation of both Anthropic and Open AI.”
The letter – also signed by the American Association of Independent Music, National Music Publishers’ Association, and the Recording Industry Association of America – expressed support for the responsible development of AI and interest in the Institute’s plans to test and evaluate Anthropic and OpenAI’s systems. Noting AI developers’ unauthorized scraping and copying of training materials, the letter recalled statements by the G7, NIST, and NTIA recognizing risks generative AI development poses to intellectual property rights, and acknowledging the need to mitigate such risks. The letter urged AISI to keep these policy statements and recommendations in mind when testing and evaluating Anthropic and OpenAI’s algorithms, examine and report on any unauthorized use of copyrighted content in the datasets, and ensure that the companies engage in adequate recordkeeping and transparency obligations consistent with NTIA’s recommendations and NIST’s best practices.
