News/Media Alliance Applauds the Copyright Office, Urges It to Swiftly Remove Content-Based Requirement Limiting Publishers’ Ability to Register Online Content

On June 29, the News/Media Alliance filed comments with the Copyright Office regarding the Office’s proposal to update its rule on Group Registration of Updates to a News Website (GRNW). The update would amend the definition of a “news website” to remove the requirement that the website must “contains a broad range of news on all subjects and activities and is not limited to any specific subject matter.” Since the 2024 adoption of GRNW, the NMA has encouraged the Office to remove the content-based limitation and clarify that news publishers who serve specific reader segments are equally eligible to register using this option. Today’s comments commended the Office for proposing the update, and urged the Office to adopt the rule swiftly and with immediate effect. The comments also reiterated other improvements to the rule that NMA has advocated for in the past, including allowing the registration of app-only content, as well as the need for an option to bulk register individual online articles.
