On June 24, News/Media Alliance filed comments with the U.S. Copyright Office regarding the Office’s recent Notice of Inquiry on alternative fee structures for registration. The comments noted that to make the copyright system more efficient and streamlined, the Office should prioritize IT modernization and plan any alternative fee structure for the updated registration system. The comments also called for close engagement with the copyright community, noted the importance of incentivizing and increasing registration rates, and embracing technical solutions and user experience improvements that tie neatly into rightsholder production processes. In addition to urging the Office to develop an efficient option for publishers to register individual online works in bulk, the comments also discussed the Office’s proposed alternative fee structures, expressing interest in exploring reduced fees for small entities and a subscription fee model.
