Senior Vice President, Finance and Administration

Reporting to News/Media Alliance’s (N/MA) President and CEO, the Senior Vice President, Finance and Administration will be responsible for managing the overall finance and administrative functions of N/MA and its research affiliate, the American Press Institute.  The incumbent will be a strong team player, foster cross-functional collaboration and effective financial practices across organizations, and partner closely with the N/MA’s CEO and boards of the organizations to steward the organizations’ financial health and operational integrity.  This position will supervise the Director of HR and Operations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the President and CEO, the SVP, Finance and Administration will lead/perform the following activities in support of the organizations:

  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the organizations’ objectives.
  • Direct all financial aspects of the organizations including budgeting, cash flow management, banking, financial analysis, financial reporting, investments, audit activities, corporate insurance, tax filings, accounts, ledgers and reporting systems and ensure adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory requirements and federal statutory audit requirements.
  • Work with the CEO, the boards and the investment advisors to review and update the Investment Policy Statement and annual draws, and any supplemental draws needed for strategic initiatives.
  • Provide grants management support for the American Press Institute, including proposal submissions, budgeting/forecasting, financial reporting and audits.
  • Manage relationships with investment advisors, external auditors, tax advisors, commercial bankers, accounting firms and corporate insurance brokers.
  • Provide insightful and actionable financial and operational information, analyses and modeling to senior management and boards on investment and financial decisions, influencing both strategy and operational decisions.
  • Direct HR and operations functions including payroll, employee benefits, IT and facilities management.
  • Oversee invoices for membership dues and systems operations.

Desirable Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant, progressively responsible experience in a similar membership or non-profit organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting, financial analysis, financial reporting, financial systems, investments, audit, tax, strategic planning, internal controls, risk management, IT and employee benefits.
  • Deep understanding of non-profit governance, compliance, and best practices.
  • Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with issue experts and other colleagues.
  • Strong time management skills, ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, professional environment while managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.  This position requires the individual to be available for extended hours.
  • Highest level of integrity and professionalism.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a collaborative approach to work.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate financial complexity into clear, compelling insights.
  • Experience with financial management technology and software.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications.
