Supreme Court Reinstates FCC Media-Ownership Reforms, Overturns Lower Court Decision Blocking Repeal of Ownership Restrictions

The Supreme Court today issued a unanimous decision in Prometheus Radio Project vs FCC, upholding 2017 reforms that streamlined and modernized the Federal Communications Commission’s media cross-ownership rules, including a 1970s-era rule that repealed a ban on the ownership of a newspaper and a television or radio station in the same market.

As members of the 117th Congress consider solutions to these challenges, the News Media for Open Government (NMOG) coalition calls on Congress to promote policies that bolster the First Amendment, the value of journalists, a free press, and a more transparent and open government.

News Media Groups Applaud Representatives Bustos and Aderholt for Calling on GAO to Review Government Advertising Spending, Assess Agency Use of Local Media

Today, Representatives Cheri Bustos (D-IL) and Robert Aderholt (R-AL) sent a letter to U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) requesting that it conduct a comprehensive review of current government agency expenditures on advertising and to examine how federal agencies could place more advertising with local news publishers and broadcast stations.
