News/Media Alliance Announces AI Licensing Partnership with ProRata

Arlington, VA – Today, the News/Media Alliance announced the launch of an AI licensing framework agreement with ProRata AI, who is working to ensure publishers and creators are fairly credited and compensated by generative AI.

As the leading trade association for news media publishers, News/Media Alliance is offering its members the opportunity to opt into a content license with ProRata AI for use with its Gist.AI product. ProRata’s attribution technology will identify when publisher content is used in generative AI answers, attribute the information to them, and compensate them for the use of their content. ProRata will pay 50% of all revenues from Gist.AI to publishers. Some News/Media Alliance members, including McClatchy, the Atlantic, and the MIT Technology Review, among others, are already content partners with ProRata AI, and we expect many more to take advantage of this opportunity.

The News/Media Alliance is dedicated to promoting efficient marketplace solutions to the problems posed by the explosion of the generative AI industry, and the frequent usage of publisher content by AI companies without compensation. By offering technology companies the opportunity to reach multiple publishers at once, the Alliance hopes to make it easier for AI companies to reduce transaction costs and responsibly source their content.

Danielle Coffey, President and CEO of the News/Media Alliance, said, “We are thrilled to be partnering with ProRata to provide our members access to their innovative licensing and attribution system. This agreement should serve as a model for how the AI industry can continue to grow sustainably. AI companies can and must cooperate with publishers and content creators, rather than exploit their work without compensation. This agreement shows a path towards a future in which our industries grow and thrive together – with AI companies benefiting from the high-quality content that publishers create, and publishers receiving a fair portion of the revenue that their work produces for AI companies.”

Bill Gross, Founder and CEO of ProRata.ai, has emphasized the critical need for fair compensation in the evolving AI landscape. He stated, “Content creators are the backbone of the knowledge economy, especially journalists and specialty publishers, and they deserve fair recognition and compensation for their contributions. Generative AI cannot thrive on a foundation of stolen or uncredited content—it’s neither sustainable nor just. Our collaboration with the News/Media Alliance exemplifies our commitment to building a transparent, equitable knowledge ecosystem that rewards creators and sets the highest standard for reliability in AI outputs. We are excited to partner with them to engage with their 2,200 members on our mission.”
