California Senate Committee Advances Bill to Curtail Abusive CIPA Lawsuits

On Tuesday, April 29th, the California Senate Public Safety Committee unanimously voted to advance SB 690, which seeks to close a loophole in the 1967 California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) that is being used to sue businesses, including news media entities, for their standard use of everyday online technologies. Los Angeles Times President and Chief Operating Officer Chris Argentieri provided strong testimony on the need for the bill to protect journalism from exposure to frivolous lawsuits, and the Alliance joined more than a dozen trade associations and businesses at the hearing to speak in support. The Alliance will continue to work with the bill sponsor, Senator Anna Caballero, as the bill advances in the Senate.
