The News Media Industry is Under Attack

Dangers to our industry are growing by the day, and the future has never been more at risk:

  • Technological change and Big Tech monopolies are rapidly undermining the foundational business models of the news media industry.
  • Economic headwinds at both the national and local levels are threatening the sustainability of countless businesses, both large and small.
  • Our regulatory system, once designed to cultivate a thriving economy and well-informed populace, now acts as a burden weighing down the industry.

These are not inconveniences – they are existential threats. If we fail to act now, the news/media industry as we know it will be unrecognizable in ten years.

To continue to thrive, we need champions in Washington who recognize the importance of the news media industry. We cannot afford to ignore the importance of government decisions that have a profound effect on the news media industry, for better and for worse. Every day, legislators make decisions that have long-term impacts on the viability of your business. The News Media Alliance PAC exists to elevate your voice in Washington, and ensure that we have allies in Congress who will fight for our industry.

What is the purpose of the News Media Alliance PAC?

The News Media Alliance PAC is a separate segregated fund of the News/Media Alliance registered with the Federal Election Commission. It exists to help the Alliance better represent the news media industry in Washington by:

  • Providing campaign contributions to federal candidates for elective office who understand the importance of the issues that matter to our industry.
  • Offering News/Media Alliance and our member companies with a greater ability to support elected officials.
  • Informing and updating PAC members about key legislative and regulatory issues that affect the news media industry.
The News Media Alliance PAC is an effective way for you to become more politically active and support candidates who understand the legislative priorities that will impact your business and the entire industry.

The News Media Alliance PAC advocates for your interests, including:

  • Protection of intellectual property
  • Responsible AI law that respects content creators
  • Fair compensation for the use of publisher content by tech platforms
  • Advertising deductibility, exemptions from digital taxes, and other tax relief
  • Tariff exemptions
  • Clear, enforceable data privacy protections
  • Protection for reporters and the newsgathering process

About the News Media Alliance PAC

The News Media Alliance PAC is administered by the News Media Alliance PAC Advisory Board. Recommendations for contributions are made by both News/Media Alliance staff and members based on a candidate’s past record of performance, understanding of issues affecting the news media industry, and likelihood of future support for initiatives and legislation supported by the News/Media Alliance. Campaign contributions are directed by the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the News/Media Alliance, and approved by the PAC’s Advisory Board.

PAC contributions are completely voluntary, and no individual will benefit or be harmed by their choice to give or not give to the PAC. Federal law mandates the disclosure of contributor information, including name, mailing address, occupation, and employer. Only U.S. citizens and green card holders are eligible to join the PAC, and contributions are not tax-deductible. Contributions from corporations are prohibited.

Your voluntary contribution to the News Media Alliance PAC is another way in which you can help invest in the future of the news media industry.
