Alliance, Others Encourage USPS to Incentivize Business Mailings Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The Alliance and 11 other business associations sent a letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) encouraging the agency to put forward measures in the coming weeks that will provide business mailers with incentives to stay in our nation’s postal system during the COVID-19 crisis.  Associations representing newspapers, magazines, direct mailers, non-profit mailers and others reminded USPS management that its operations are fully funded by postage rates paid by individuals and businesses.

Alliance Encourages Census Director to Advertise Online Census Option in Newspapers

The Alliance sent a letter to U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham, in light of his March 18 announcement that Census field operations would be temporarily suspended due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, encouraging him to advertise for the online completion of the 2020 Census and to employ print and digital newspaper media, which reach millions of Americans weekly, in this awareness effort.

Proposed Postal Rate Increases Would be Unsustainable for Newspapers

Currently, USPS can raise or lower rates for products such as Periodicals and Marketing Mail (e.g. TMC products) on an annual basis, with smaller, predictable rate increases that do not exceed the inflation-based price cap. But this pricing structure that brought newspapers predictable pricing could be in jeopardy if a new rate-setting system is approved.

Congressional Hearing Highlights Importance of National Memorial to Fallen Journalists

A national memorial is important for paying tribute to journalists who perished not only while reporting on the front lines of battle, but those whose lives were lost while simply fulfilling their duty to deliver the news. That was the message delivered at a December 4, 2019, Congressional hearing by advocates for legislation to establish a Fallen Journalists Memorial in Washington, DC.
