News/Media Alliance Commends Ohio Governor’s Veto on Removal of Newspaper Tax Exemption

On Monday, June 30th, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced a line-item veto of a budget item that would have removed the state’s century-old sales tax exemption for newspaper subscriptions, in addition to restoring certain other printing exemptions that could have negatively impacted advertising in news media. The Alliance previously called on the Governor to veto the measures that “could be devastating for the news media entities serving Ohio’s local communities and deprive its citizens of access to critical, trusted sources of high-quality journalism.”

Governor DeWine’s veto message notes: “Newspapers serve a critical role in our society to inform the public about important issues, allow for civic engagement and discourse, and help bolster local communities.”

The Alliance commends Governor DeWine’s recognition of the unique role news media plays in serving the people of Ohio. We look forward to working with the Legislature to further clarify the importance of advertising to news media and local businesses.
