News/Media Alliance Submits Comment on California Privacy Protection Agency proposed rulemaking on automated decisionmaking

On February 19, 2025, the News/Media Alliance submitted a comment to the California Privacy Protection Agency opposing proposed regulations that would jeopardize consumer access to free or affordable high-quality journalism.

The Alliance argues that expanding the definition of “automated decisionmaking” would deprive consumers of benefits like content personalization and subscription deals. Additionally, the Agency’s proposed definition of “behavioral advertising” would needlessly limit access to high-quality journalism supported by first-party advertising and impose new compliance requirements that are unsupported by the California Consumer Privacy Act, FTC guidance, or other state privacy laws.

The Alliance urges the Agency to revise its proposal to protect the vital role of news publishers in providing reliable information to consumers for free or low cost, and supporting California’s economy.
