NAA Names Michael MaLoon Vice President of Innovation

April 20, 2016

Arlington, Va. – The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) today announced the hire of Michael MaLoon as Vice President of Innovation, a new position created to further the collaboration, advocacy and advancement of the newspaper industry. In this role, MaLoon will work closely with the NAA leadership team to ensure that the organization is helping its member companies innovate and succeed.

MaLoon will focus on creating new strategic initiatives and designing unique partnerships that will propel innovation in the industry, working collaboratively with NAA staff to execute strategic research and communications programs.

“Michael is an insightful, creative leader who has a deep understanding of the opportunities ahead for news publishers,” said NAA president and CEO, David Chavern. “Our industry is in the midst of constant evolution and experimentation, and Michael is uniquely positioned to facilitate strategic conversations and partnerships on behalf of our members. We are thrilled to welcome him to our team.”

MaLoon has built an extensive executive career in media, publishing and marketing, focused on research-driven product development to create growth. He most recently served as the director of sales and operations at The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, where he led the launch of a new Chronicle Unlimited program that generated important incremental revenue. MaLoon’s previous positions include consulting for NextGen Marketing Group, digital director of The Buffalo News, director of recruitment advertising for Newsday Media Group, president of CyberInk, a Times Publishing Co. subsidiary, and online director of The Observer-Dispatch.

Under MaLoon’s leadership, The Buffalo News achieved aggressive revenue goals of more than 18 percentage points, including a nearly 23 percent increase in display advertising and 11 percent growth in digital classifieds. He also founded the subsidiary digital services agency Canalside Media, launched a new suite of mobile products and led the transition of all newspaper properties to a paid access model. Prior to this, as president of CyberInk, he increased online revenue for GoErie.com and its sister properties by more than 200 percent.

“I am deeply committed to the power and purpose of news media, and am honored to now work on behalf of the Newspaper Association of America’s members,” said MaLoon. “It has been a privilege to see the ongoing development and transformation of the newspaper industry firsthand, and I am excited to work with the association’s great staff to contribute to its advancement.”

MaLoon attended the Rochester Institute of Technology.
