The graphic below is based on information from the Reuters Institute Digital News Report for 2018. Among many trends and insights it shares related to digital news consumption, the report covers the decline of social media usage for news reporting, as well as the increase of messaging apps for news reporting. According to the report, changes in Facebook usage habits seem to be the cause for the decline of social media usage for news reporting in some countries, specifically the United States. The report states, “39 percent of people said they used Facebook as a source of news in 2018, down 9 percentage points from 2017. And if you look just at young people in the U.S., their use of Facebook for news is down by 20 percent compared to 2017.”
