News Media Alliance Announces Newest Member, VICE Media

March 11, 2019

Arlington, VA – The News Media Alliance is pleased to announce that VICE Media has become its newest member. VICE is a global youth media company, headquartered in Brooklyn, New York that provides award-winning content around the world through an expanding international network of digital channels; a television and feature film production studio; magazine; podcasts and mobile apps. VICE is known in the U.S for its Emmy-winning HBO nightly newscast VICE News Tonight, which airs daily on the cable network.

Josh Tyrangiel, Executive Vice President, VICE News said, “With seismic shifts taking place across our industry and ongoing threats to the very existence of the fourth estate, impartial, fact-based journalism has never been more important and neither has the work of organizations like the News Media Alliance, who strive to protect it.

VICE has reinvented the way youth audiences consume news, whether through immersive documentary-style storytelling or by dismantling the nightly news format through VICE News Tonight. We’re thrilled to partner with an alliance that understands the importance of that pursuit and we’re proud to join them as they continue to champion the cornerstones of journalism.”

Alliance President & CEO David Chavern stated, “We are delighted to welcome VICE to the Alliance, and we are glad they see the value and importance of the work we do for the industry. Given the current social media-driven media environment, having sources of quality news has never been more important. The support of innovative and forward-thinking partners like VICE is invaluable as we continue to fight hard for the industry’s future.”

VICE was founded 25 years ago, in 1994, in Montreal, Canada. It launched in the U.S. in 1999 and moved its headquarters to Brooklyn in 2002. From its start, it has embraced multiple platforms, with a strong digital video presence, print magazines, audio sites and television programs. Its television show, VICE on HBO, premiered in 2013 and it launched its VICE News site in 2014.

“VICE’s membership in the Alliance is a bellwether of the journey many news publishers are currently on to stay competitive in today’s social media-driven environment,” Chavern said. “Whether beginning as a print publication 100 years ago, or as a web- and mobile-first producer in the digital age, all publishers of original news content are facing the same challenges brought on by the fast-paced news cycle, the proliferation of fake news and the increasing threats posed by the big tech platforms. But time after time, we have overcome tremendous challenges facing the industry and have gone on to achieve great success, and we are optimistic about the future of the news business.”
