Sacramento, CA – In a victory for news publishers and millions of consumers of news content both in California and across the United States, today California Governor Newsom signed into law SB 690, a bill that would amend the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) to provide relief for news publishers targeted by unreasonable lawsuits based on the current text of the law.
In recent years, news publishers and small businesses have faced a wave of lawsuits and arbitration demands under legacy CIPA provisions for utilizing standard, widely accepted online tools and tracking technology. SB 690 would preserve the underlying statute while providing a common-sense correction to protect news publishers.
In response to the Governor’s decision, Danielle Coffey, the President and CEO of the News/Media Alliance, issued the following statement, “The News/Media Alliance thanks Governor Newsom for signing into law SB 690, a bill that would amend the California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) to provide relief for news publishers targeted by unreasonable lawsuits based on the current text of the law. A wave of overzealous suits based on CIPA has posed an unsustainable threat to media organizations both in California and all across the country, and this fix will continue to protect the privacy of Californians while giving publishers increased legal protection they need to operate without fear of unreasonable lawsuits for ordinary digital operations.”
