The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s Government Operations Subcommittee held a hearing on June 4 with the Commissioners of the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). Newspapers and magazines were discussed numerous times during the hearing, which is a direct result of NMA advocacy. Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) and Ranking Member, Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) both mentioned concerns and Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) asked a question on our behalf. In addition, PRC Commissioner, Ann Fisher stated about magazines and newspapers, “A huge amount of people are relying on it, looking forward to it, and reliability of service is dramatically lacking…”
The financial condition of USPS, alarming rate increases, volume loss, service delivery, labor costs, and more were discussed. The PRC advocated for a need to define the Universal Service Obligation. NMA will continue to work with Congress, the PRC, the USPS, and the Office of USPS Inspector General to address postal issues and continue to work on legislation that will benefit our members.
