Higher single copy prices and changing lifestyles have steadily eroded newsrack sales and newspapers have responded by shifting resources to retail accounts.
The Albuquerque Journal recently ended its newsrack sales and the newspaper is focusing on digital subscriptions, home delivery and retail sales. About three years ago, the newspaper had more than 1,000 racks. Chipping away at its least profitable racks, it had 500 left by the start of this year. After further assessment, it decided to wrap up the service.
In this presentation, Joe Leong will explain the strategy to eliminate newsracks and how they replaced the lost sales and reduced expenses with new retail outlets and by selling non-traditional single copies.
Last year, the Atlanta Journal Constitution launched a Wednesday Bulldog edition to seize Thanksgiving Day sales and revenue opportunities. Steve Edwards will share how that program increased their Thanksgiving sales more than 5% above a year earlier, along with tactics and strategies newspapers can implement to maximize sales and build lasting relationships in the market with their retailers.
